A gentle day

Saturday 3rd June; Crack’s Hill to bridge 33

A peaceful night, with our woolly neighbours quite quiet. After breakfast we needed some shopping, so walked the footpath from bridge 14 to the village.  On Nicholson’s it looked to be a straight line as far as the bypass, but since that was published the path has been diverted round a new sports field and past the Jubilee Wood.  Which Jubilee?  It looks quite established.  We found the footbridge over the bypass, having asked directions from another dog-walker, but still struggled to find our way through the housing estate.  Eventually we could hear a bus waiting at the bus stop, so we knew we were getting close to the road!  We came out nearly opposite the Post Office.  Fortunately they had everything we wanted – including some locally-grown rhubarb – so there was no need to walk on to the Co-op.  It took us 20 minutes to walk back, 10 minutes less than going!

See you in a few days

It was well after 10 when we left, in lovely sunshine, though the wind was still cold.  First stop was the water point at Yelvertoft.  The flow was stronger than expected, and however careful we were to avoid overfilling, we failed – so although the cabin bilge was dry before we started this morning, by our lunchtime stop the overflow had made its way sternwards and there was a little water in the cabin bilge.  Still, at least we can now be almost certain that the problem is spilt water and not leaky pipes.  Dave will try using sealer to fill the gap.

We cruised on in lovely sunshine, the boaters coming towards us in their t-shirts, even bare tops in a couple of cases.  But it was still jolly cold for us when the bendy route took us directly into the wind, and we kept ourselves wrapped up.  The wind turbines weren’t turning as quickly as yesterday though.

A lot of them about

We stopped for lunch at bridge 24, Smart’s bridge, a lovely spot.  We would have stayed there too if there had been any TV signal – it’s Cup Final day.  He's not fussed about the result, but Dave really would like to see the game.  So we carried on through the beautiful countryside.

Raspberries and cream

We pulled in again at bridge 33, where there was good TV reception, though sadly that didn’t also mean good internet reception!  But with so little habitation on the route it’s not really surprising that phone coverage is poor.

6 bendy miles, rather slowly.

  2. Hello Ian, nice to hear from you!. We're on our way to Gayton marina, where we'll leave the boat for a while before tackling the Nene for the first time ever! Very excited about that! Where are you based at the moment and where are you going?
    Best wishes Debby

    1. Hi Debby. Festival is a share boat so we get 4 weeks a year. The boat is based at Aston Marina on the T&M. We had 2 separate weeks in April and cruised the Caldon, Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canals- very enjoyable apart from a 24 hour delay due to a failed electric lift bridge. Cheers Ian
